Effective Instructions on How to Write a Good Research Paper

You will surely be asked several times in school to write a research paper. A research paper is designed to have you choose a topic and then dive deep into academic resources to draw a specific conclusion from your findings. You will then develop a thesis and prove your thesis.

It can be a frustrating experience if you don’t have the information that you need to do it effectively. Here are some great tips on how to write a good research paper.

Step One: Topic

Choosing a topic is very important. You want to choose one that is interesting to you. You also want one that is narrow enough to be able to get a good grasp on the material and broad enough that you have enough to write about.

Step Two: Outline

This is a great step that a lot of people skip. As you are doing some preliminary research on the topic you have chosen, start writing your outline. A simple five paragraph outline will do for almost all research papers. Once you have an outline it will be easier to write your thesis because you will have already found your three supporting claims.

Step Three: Thesis

This is the main point of your paper and what you are trying to prove. You can use the three supporting details to make a claim about your subject and this is your thesis statement. It should be located in the introductory paragraph after the background information. It is most of the time displayed as the last sentence in the introduction.

Step Four: Research

Start doing some research more specific to proving your three supporting claims. Be sure to keep all of the source information because it should be included in the reference page of your research paper. When using any direct quotes, be sure to take the time to format them correctly. Keep one sheet with all of your proper citations on it. This is important because then you can just use the shorthand information in your notes. Be sure to site sources even if you don’t take direct quotes if it isn’t common knowledge.

Once you have completed these four steps you are well on your way to writing your paper. You will have all of the information that you need. You have your main topic, what you are trying to prove, the guide, and the facts.
